Supporting Children and Young Adults with Cancer

International Childhood Cancer Day - 15 February 2023 - is all about raising awareness of childhood cancer and gaining a greater understanding of the issues and challenges faced by children or adolescents with cancer.
In Australia, every day three families will hear the words: 'your child has cancer’, according to Redkite, an Australian organisation helping families facing childhood cancer.
A cancer diagnosis as a child, teen or young adult is a very challenging and emotional time – for the child and their family. The cause of cancer can often be unknown, treatment can go on for years, and those who survive can have significant long-term effects due to their treatment.
Many Australian organisations provide much-needed information, resources and support for children, teens and young adults with cancer, as well as their families, carers and friends.
Cancer Council Victoria and Cancer Australia are great places to start. They have:
Resources relating to the different types of childhood cancer, diagnosis, and treatment;
Information on where to find additional support, including a comprehensive list of national organisations;
Guidance on how you can talk to children about cancer and the reactions and emotions associated with childhood cancer.
